Matt is a former Field Artilleryman who served in the United States Army from 1998 to 2001. He was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he was assigned to 3rd Howitzer Battery, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. During this time, he served as an assistant gunner and gunner on the M198, and his section was recognized four times as the battery’s “Top Gun.”
While at Fort Polk, he was also attached to 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment (Airborne) in an Opposing Force (OPFOR) role at the Joint Readiness Training Center. In that role, he participated in large-scale training exercises designed to replicate real-world combat conditions for Army units preparing to deploy. He is Air Assault qualified and Combat Lifesaver certified.
After leaving active duty, Matt pursued higher education and enrolled in ROTC with the intent to commission. He continued his service in the Wisconsin Army National Guard from 2001 to 2005, where he served as a Sergeant in Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 120th Field Artillery Regiment, 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. During this time, he led and developed soldiers while supporting artillery training and operations. He also gained experience on both the M109 Paladin and the M119 howitzer.
A chronic service-connected injury led to a medical discharge, ending his path toward commissioning and bringing his Field Artillery career to an early close. For years, he carried a sense that others had done more and that his own service fell short. That perspective drove him to find a way to give back to the Field Artillery, even outside of uniform.
Following his separation, he moved into business leadership. While it provides stability and meaning, it does not replace the sense of purpose he found in military service.
Go Artillery was created as a way to return to that purpose. It exists to support, promote, and advocate for the Field Artillery community. It reflects a commitment to those who have served, those currently serving, and those considering the path.
He may not be on the gun line anymore, but he will always be a Redleg.
